It is already challenging to teach a mobile robot how to navigate our complex environment. It is even more difficult to control and coordinate a large group of robots. Swarm robotics therefore often use biologically inspired methods. Even if each individual robot only follows simple rules, the interaction of the swarm as a whole can still produce something complex. We consider important questions: How can the swarm solve tasks that a single robot cannot? What is an ideal team size? What influence could swarm robotics have on future automation technology?
