Regulations for the final part of studies

For the Master's programme Computer and Information Science

The final part of studies comprises approximately the last two semesters and consists of the seminar, the project, the master’s thesis and the colloquium. Normally, the master’s thesis builds on the project, which is itself very often closely related with the topics of the seminar. That means that with choosing the seminar, you actually already set a direction for your master’s thesis.

Deadlines for registration and submission

The following deadlines exist for registering and submitting the project and the master’s thesis:

In order to avoid extending the time for your degree, it is recommended to register the final thesis directly after the submission of the project. However, it is possible to register the thesis at a later scheduled date, e.g. if further credits still have to be acquired.

Please allow sufficient time for filling in the forms and obtaining signatures!

How do I choose a topic for the master's project?

As stated above, the topic for the master’s project very often results from the area that is covered in the seminar. So for choosing a fitting seminar, you should consider which topic to choose early on. Many research groups offer overviews of current projects on their homepages or project proposal talks, which can be used to get a first impression what projects are possible in the different reseach groups. You should make use of this information to prepare for the mentor meeting.

How do I register the master's project?

To register for the master's project, please fill out the registration form. This must be signed by you and your supervisor. You will also need to add a time schedule. The deadline for the project is determined by the date you register it (see above).

Please hand in the complete documents during the registration period at the examination office (PZ 811) or send it to mastercis.inf@uni-konstanz.de.

Can the deadline for handing in the project be extended?

The deadline for the master’s project can be extended once and for no more than six weeks if the supervisor grants the extension. Please note that there is only one month between the submission of the project and the registration of the thesis. That means that if the deadline for the project is extended, the correction time is shortened accordingly or the registration of the thesis must be postponed until the next registration deadline.

Where do I hand in my master's project?

Please hand in the project to your supervisor in the form the supervisor specified.

Can the deadline for the thesis be extended?

The deadline can be extended for no more than 3 months, if you are not responsible for the delay. The application must be received by the StPA at least two weeks before the end of the processing time, except in justified exceptional cases, and must include the consent of the supervisor.

Registering the master’s colloquium

Requirements for admission to the final colloquium

You can only be admitted to the colloquium on the master's thesis

  • if you have handed in the master's thesis and
  • if you have passed all required course-related academic performance assessments and all coursework and these have been entered into ZEuS.

Which forms and signatures do I need?

You can find the necessary forms here.

The colloquium is the final examination of your master's programme. Please make an appointment for the colloquium with your examiners well in advance. They must confirm the date on the form.

The form also contains an overview of the courses you have completed, which must be signed by the study advisory service (M.Sc. CIS: Katrin Winkler). This is to check that you have fulfilled all requirements and to determine which courses will later be listed on your final degree certificate. Please come to the office hours about 3-4 weeks before the planned colloquium date.

In addition to the signatures of your examiners and of the study advisory service, you need the signature of the head of the departmental examination board.

When and where do I register for my colloquium?

In general, the student and the examiner(s) agree on a date and a room for the colloquium mutually. To ensure a trouble-free process, these details are already fixed when the thesis is submitted, so that the colloquium registration can take place together with the submission of the thesis to the ZPA. The colloquium should usually take place two to max. four weeks after the submission of the thesis.

Please register the colloquium with the Central Examination Office (ZPA) at least two weeks before the scheduled colloquium date. If there is less than one working week between registration and colloquium date, the ZPA reserves the right in individual cases not to accept colloquium registrations.

Can I register for and take exams after having registered for the colloquium?

When registering for the colloquium, you must have completed all the required coursework and exams for your master's degree. With the registration form for the colloquium, you also specify which courses should go onto your certificate and count into your final grade.

However, it may happen that you want to take further exams which do not count towards your master's degree. This is possible but please make sure that you register these additional exams in ZEuS in the account "Additional voluntary course work (does not count towards your final grade and total of credits)".
