Abstract

One of the big challenges in teaching foundation courses consists in coping with the heterogeneity of the first-year students with respect to their prior knowledge, basic skills, competence, and motivation. My main concern is to overcome this in my lectures by stimulating enthusiasm and interest in the subject and in turn creating the basis for a sustainable transfer of knowledge. In this talk, five factors that have proven to be particularly helpful for this purpose will be presented and made tangible through various examples.
